Surprise, surprise...
Living in Japan will bring plenty of surprises no doubt.
Here are a few of the things that hit me immediately however.
Everyone is Japanese.
Obviously right, I thought so too. Being an American college student,
I was used to seeing all different kinds of people, all different kinds of
hair color, clothes, everything. In Japan, you'll notice that everyone is Japanese. It can be quite shocking.
Deer?
It seems that all the deer in Japan are all caged up.
No problems with hitting them while driving down lonely highways like in the States.
However in Nara, the deer have their antlers trimmed, and are hand fed by humans so often it's
hard to keep them away!
People aren't so tall.
Of course, everyone expects this, however when you are riding
on a crowded subway for the first time, you will truly understand.
People like lining up.
It's not uncommon to wait 45 minutes plus for some food at a famous place.
Maybe it's because I'm personally from super 'inaka' Iowa, but that's a long
freaking time to wait for a meal!
These people are waiting for the best tako-yaki in Japan`. The best.
Vending Machines
You can buy anything out of a vending machine in Japan. Coke, cigarettes, Playboy, beer, bowling shoes, cheese burgers,
you name it.
