Prefectures
Japanese 101: Prefectures!
Has this ever happened to you?
You: “Oh you’re from Japan?! Great! I love Japan! Where in Japan are you from? Tokyo? Osaka?”
Japanese girl: “Neither. I’m from Akita.”
You: “Ohh.. Akita…. Umm… Where is that?”
Japanese girl: “…”
It’s embarrassing when you ask a Japanese person where they’re from yet are still clueless when they tell you the answer. Especially when you should have known that Akita prefecture is famous for its beautiful women known as “Akita Bijin!” Spend some time with this application learning the basics of Japanese geography so it doesn’t happen again.
A few weeks with Japanese 101: Prefectures and you’ll know that Miyagi prefecture is directly south of Iwate, and you’ll also know that Oita prefecture isn’t even on the same island as Tokyo! You’ll even learn cultural tidbits about some locations, like the fact that Hiroshima is known for it’s delicious “Hiroshima-yaki” dish and Shizouka has great Japanese tea.
This is a flashcard application that will teach you where the prefectures in Japan are located. The app also includes audio recorded by a native speaker, so you’ll be sure to know the correct pronunciation of each location. You can also quiz your listening comprehension by hearing the prefecture and then trying to pick it out from two or four cards, depending on the difficulty setting.
Enjoy!
