New students of Japanese will agree that Japanese particles like は、が、に、and で are tricky to use correctly. However, all students of Japanese must master particle usage to be able to put together a coherent sentence. Advanced learners will recommend that new students study the basic rules governing the use of particles and then listen to and read as many correct examples as possible. “Japanese 101: Particles” packs these essential particle study elements into your iPhone or iPod Touch so you can study anywhere!

The Japanese particles taught in this application include: は、が、に、で、と、も、や、を、にも、でも、より、か、まで、から、and more!

You can use Japanese 101: Particles in two modes, the Study Mode and the Quiz Mode.

When using the Study Mode the front of the Study Card shows a sentence in Japanese with a key particle removed. The card also auto-plays audio of a native Japanese speaker reading the sentence leaving a blank at the missing particle. Touch the card to flip it over and see the sentence with the correct particle used, the romaji, and the English translation. You can also press the notes section to see a grammatical explanation of the particle usage.

This way you can SEE the Japanese, HEAR the Japanese, and read the romaji and translation to ensure that you UNDERSTAND, and also check the notes section to STUDY the fundamental rules on particle usage. Do this often and you’re sure to improve your understanding of Japanese particle usage!

The Quiz Mode will test your listening comprehension skills and train your ear for Japanese. After you chose the sections to quiz yourself on the app will randomly read a sentence in Japanese with the particle missing. You’ll then attempt to touch the correct particle to fill in the blank from among 2 or 4 options, depending on the difficulty setting. After taking the quiz you can review the questions that you missed.

All of the questions in this app are modeled after those that tend to appear in the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT). We are not associated with JLPT in anyway so cannot assure that the questions on the test will be in exactly this format, but we are confident that studying the particles in this way will improve your understanding of particle usage, and hopefully improve your test scores. All of the Japanese audio was recorded by a native Japanese speaker, and all of the sentence explanations were created by a native Japanese language instructor. You can be assured that the content is of high quality.

The current version includes more than 50 questions for the introductory JLPT level 4 (equivalent to the new N5 level for JLPT 2010). The next version will include 50 more questions for JLPT level 3.

Enjoy!
