Ulfuls Osaka Strut

One of my all-time favorite Japanese bands… ULFULS (ウルフルズ) and their video for Osaka Strut (大阪ストラット). If you recall, Osaka is the wackiest city in Japan, and this, is an ode to Osaka. The tower that appears right at the beginning of the video is Tsuutenkaku which has been mentioned on JapanNewbie before. And what’s [...]

Use this wallpaper on your computer and be the envy of all your friends. Dude’s standing a pile of money!!! ブリングブリング♪ This wallpaper is from a famous Japanese TV Drama staring Riki Takeuchi called Minami no Teiou or, roughly translated, “The Caesar of South Osaka”. Semba Curry

One of my favorite places to grab lunch during the work week was Semba Curry in Osaka. The curry at Semba Curry doesn’t look like much, but it tastes really good. Most curry has a brown colored roux, but the roux at Semba Curry is a deeper darker brown that kind of looks like old [...]
Traditional Japanese Home in the City
Posted by harvey in Osaka on 14. May, 2008 | 12 Comments
Here is a large (for Japanese standards) Japanese home right in Osaka. I usually don’t see houses of this style unless I get away from the city. Nice isn’t it? Garden, wall, tiled roof, woody, classic. And they’ve got a guard-cat. – Harvey
Negiyaki at Yamamoto in Juso

I “found” another incredibly famous and non-hidden negiyaki shop in Osaka. Pretty much every Japanese person in Osaka knows about the Negiyaki shop named Yamamoto. Negiyaki is very similar to Okonomiyaki, except it has tons of green onions inside, and usually not as much sauce. We ordered the deluxe negiyaki, so it had pork, squid, [...]
Liberal Help Wanted

This is just your run-of-the-mill “help wanted” poster in Japan. With a down right dangerous twist. It says… 年齢伺わず 問わず- We won’t ask your age (meaning any legal age is OK) 性別伺わず 問わず- We won’t ask your sex (meaning they don’t discriminate male or female) オカマOK – Homosexuals are OK too. Some joke. Only in [...]
Flashy Cat-print Car

Nice car! I’m serious. There is something about Kansai… This just wouldn’t fly in Tokyo. No way. The plates were from Kobe by the way… But it was parked in OSAKA. I love this crazy city! – Harvey
A Final Meal at Kuidaore

Well, I decided to eat at Kuidaore one last time, considering the fact that they’re closing in July. There were even more people than usual snapping shots of the doll this Saturday night. So many cameras…The sign announces that they will be closing July 8th.This is what it feels like to be famous. No escape from [...]
