A new album called MAKI-TAKAI NO JETLAG by Maki Nomiya & Fernanda Takai came out just today on HearJapan.com.
I owe a huge chunk of my Japanese listening comprehension abilities to Nomiya Maki. I had Pizzicato Five on “heavy rotation” back when she was with that legendary band. As a hardcore fan I just had to pick this one up.
Here’s a quote from HearJapan’s description of the album:
Maki Nomiya, the famous vocalist from the legendary Japanese group Pizzicato Five and Fernanda Takai the famous vocalist from the legendary Brazilian Band, PATO FU collaborated to make MAKI-TAKAI NO JETLAG. It wasn’t easy making this EP with the 12 hour time difference between the two countries. This incredible duet create a light bossa sound with an electro tone for rich and dense tracks with a vintage feel. These two singers transcended all boundaries whether they be geographical or linguistically challenging. “A Message Song” is a cover of an old Pizzicato Five song.
I’ve listened to this a few times now (listening to it as I write this actually), and it’s really chill, upbeat, swanky… not as hyper-cute as some old school Pizzicato Five stuff. It’s fun to hear the mix of Portuguese (I’m assuming) and Japanese!
The track “A Message Song” is from an older Pizzicato Five album and is really, really, nostalgic.
Here’s a video of the original “A Message Song.”
CLASSIC.
