Our latest, and most difficult app to create… Japanese 101 Particles just hit the app store!

As Thanksgiving is just around the corner, I’m going to say THANKS and give the first 10 people to use these free download codes the app for free.

The free downloads codes will only work if you’re in on the U.S. iTunes Store… sorry about that, it’s beyond my control…

In the comments section of this post please mention when you use a code so that others will know that it’s no longer available.

On your computer…
1. Open iTunes.
2. Click “iTunes Store” in the pane on the left-hand side of the window.
3. Click the “Redeem” link in the “QUICK LINKS” box on the right-hand side of page.
4. Enter your code.
5. Click the Redeem button.
6. Learn the Particles!

This app was tough to create because it took a lot of work to really ensure that each question was accurate, and also to ensure that there were no ambiguities in the quiz section. Particle は can often be replaced with particle が and so on, so we had to be sure that those alternative answers never showed up in the possible answers for the quiz.

Anyway, this app took quite some time to put together. This version includes about 50 questions similar to what they ask on JLPT level 4. The next update will include questions at the JLPT level 3 level.

Enjoy!!!

Thanks for everyone trying it out! If you could, after you mess with it for a while, could you write a review on the iTunes Store? Some instructions on how to do that are here.

    I’d appreciate it!

Looks like all the codes have been used, so I just went ahead and bought it :). It’s quite good, as your other apps have been. I’m looking forward to more advanced particles, though — are you planning to eventually update it with all the particles covered in the JLPT material?

  • http://www.japannewbie.com harvey

Hey John thanks for shopping! Sorry you didn’t make the free app rush :-(

We are going to update it fairly soon with JLPT3 level particles. There are about 50 more for that set.

Once you move beyond JLPT 3 level we learned that actually particles by themselves are not tested much. Maybe we can expand it to include, whatever they’re called, what, conjectures? Things like と思いきや and things like that… but this might take a while.

The only thing holding up the JLPT3 data is me.. I just need to make all those image files, which is not fun hahah. Will get to it during this Thanksgiving/Christmas break though I imagine.

Let me know if you have any other suggestions/requests for the app!

Very cool! I’ll have to check it out once I steal back my iPhone from the wife.

Interesting, you’re pre-rendering the sentences as PNGs and then displaying those in the app? It seems like, long term, you’d be better off making a custom UILabel subclass that let you do rich text rendering, no?

John, I think you’re right – but I need to learn more programming to do that! Programming is -not- my strong point at all really… I just know Japanese.

If you could teach me how to do that send me an email via this http://www.japannewbie.com/talk2me/ and we’ll talk code!

Thanks for making this! Particles is the precise point where my Japanese is WEAK, and asking my instructors stuff like “Why would I use GA instead of WA in this situation” always yielded unsatisfactory results, because they didn’t know how to answer the question. Even my Japanese co-workers have a hard time trying to answer that question. I’m downloading this right now.

  • Joy

Forwarded this to James. He’s been having a hard time with particles. Message from him, “let him know that ive been HURTING for an app like this”. Thank you, Harvey!! BTW, I don’t know where you find the time to do all of this. You’re amazing.

Man, I really need an iPhone. I’m planning to wait until I get to Japan because they’re free there but things like your new app seem so super helpful and cool, I wish I had one now. Looking forward to the day I can download it.

  • http://www.japannewbie.com Harvey

Hey Adam, you might think about getting an iPod Touch -that’s what I have. No monthly fees, and wifi capabilities – and you can run all the app in the store that don’t use any calling or camera capabilities. I just use a cheapo cell phone to make calls. I hear the next iPod Touch will have a camera, but not sure when it’s coming out.

Thanks, Harvey. When I get back to Japan next year I’m going to need a phone, and the iPhone is free with a contract right now. You can’t beat free!

  • http://www.japannewbie.com harvey

True true Adam! Free, indeed, cannot be beat.

Any chance on getting some Android love in 2010?

I love your apps on my iPod Touch, but it would be awesome to be able to run them on my Android phone (Motorola Milestone).

(That and it seems that I can’t run the newest versions anymore due to the restriction to the 2nd and 3rd gen iPhones/iTouch)

    • http://www.japannewbie.com harvey

      Hey M289!

We’re actually working on Android ports now.
We’re doing an experiment with the JPhrases app first, if that goes well we’ll do the rest.

Hrm. I’ll see about ensuring backwards compatibility for the existing apps… I think I can specify that when I compile them. Be sure to update your apps when you see an update available – if I can get it working the next one could fix it. What version of iPhone OS are you running?

      Thanks for your interest!
