Semba Curry

One of my favorite places to grab lunch during the work week was Semba Curry in Osaka.

The curry at Semba Curry doesn’t look like much, but it tastes really good. Most curry has a brown colored roux, but the roux at Semba Curry is a deeper darker brown that kind of looks like old leather.

Mmm…. Curry…

It tastes great… Most of the people in my office didn’t like it though… I guess it’s an acquired taste.

This shop is near Honmachi Station, but I think there are other Semba Curry locations around Osaka… Though actually I can’t remember seeing one anywhere other than this spot in Honmachi… I’m sure there are others though!

Give it a try, it’s yum. I recommend their chicken-katsu and spinach curry. Their cheese curry is also a big hit.

I miss Japanese food!

This is how crazy-good Google Maps is: I think the photo you’ve posted is actually of the 南久宝寺location (still not too far from Honmachi), not of one of the two actual Honmachi locations. I base this solely on investigation while sitting at my desk at work. In Canada.

Google says there are at least 9 船場カリー locations in and around Osaka. I’ll be visiting Osaka this October, so I’m planning to check Senba out!

(P.S. Just FYI, it’s “roux,” not “rue,” when you’re talking about curry…)

Wow! You’re right about the roux thing. Geesh. I had no idea. That happens sometimes when words are learned first in Japan! I never had any curry-ish things back in Iowa… I’ll change that. This is why blog comments are so awesome. Love the feedback!

Nice job with the google maps.

I don’t recognize the 南久宝寺 name, but hey, you got the place! To get to this particular one, you exit Honmachi subway at exit number 12, turn right, turn right again so you’re heading down the covered-market area (shoutengai) in the direction of shinsaibashi. Then you take like the 2nd or third left and it’s on the corner across from a 7 eleven. Good eats! Man. I miss Japanese curry.

that curry’s color look waaaay too funky for me.

Squid ink is inside the roux.(rue?)
That’s why the roux at Senba Curry is deeper darker brown. :-D
