I have a wasabi plant

January 6, 2008 on 2:08 pm | In Food | | Email This Post

I’m growing wasabi in my apartment!

I went to a sushi shop that my wifes family frequents, and the master gave me a wasabi plant to take home. he has them growing in the shop, and gave us some of the leaves to eat that night.

This is the plant in the shop. (Haha, it’s sitting on top of our finished Sushi dish. I didn’t set it there, the master did.)

This isn’t the first time I have seen a wasabi plant, you might remember this Wasabi post from a while back.

This is my plant.

The sushi master gave me specific instructions on how to care for it. It doesn’t take much really, except that the water must be changed once per day. The wasabi plant requires an extremely clean water source to strive, so to create this type of environment in the home, all you have to do is be sure that the water gets changed daily.

Well, here’s hoping it’s as easy as it sounds. What am I supposed to do if I go somewhere overnight? Take it with me? Hrm…

When I was living in Yokohama 3 or 4 years ago, I managed to kill a potted cactus plant I had bought.

This is going to be tough.

Would it be possible to make some sort of self-cycling filtration system just in case you had to be away for an extended amount of time? I recall reading that Wasabi grows mainly by streams, so maybe gently flowing water is an option?

How about a small hydroponics thing? I have one up in the shed in the backyard but haven’t used it in a few years since the tragic tomato experiment. I’m jealous of your wasabi!!

How did you kill the cactus? You kind of…don’t do anything to a cactus, right? Doesn’t it just sit there in your bathroom or wherever?

You could take it back to the sushi shop and ask the master to take care of it for you…though he’d probably hate you for not having the heart and dedication to take care of it yourself :o)

I did a science project on hydroponics once. It’s a lot of fun.
