Are you a dreadist?

Posted on 25. Nov, 2007 @ 3:24 pm by harvey in Crazy Consumers, Culture, Osaka, Society

Remember how I mentioned that down at Kishiwada Danjiri Matsuri almost all of the participating girls had their hair braided?

Well, I also ran into this place in Kishiwada.

The Japan Extension Dreadist Society!

Their window was plastered with photos of their clients.

The girl in the upper right looks so young! I bet she’s eight. What a cutie!

Actually during the fesitval some random old dude stopped me and asked if I was from Jamaica. Is there some kind of Kishiwada-Jamaica bond that I’m missing here?

    Hi!
Thank you for your comment on my blog.
    I always read your blog.
    It’s really interesting!

My former boss is from Kishiwada.
I remembered that he always took a few days off,
during Danziri Matsuri, even if we were very busy.

If he didn’t join the festival at any reason,
he said he would be ‘murahatibu”村八分’.
    (It means to be ostracized.)

There’s definite love for Jamaica in Japan. I went to a reggae festival in Yoyogi Park once and everyone in the audience had cap guns so they could shoot their guns in appreciation of the music, rather than just say, “Bo! Bo! Bo!” There’s a lot of reggae that comes out of Japan too. Gwaaan!

Could it be that Kishiwada is twinned with Kingston?

    Englishman!

Not that I do 100% of my research on Wikipedia but, I just did…

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingston,_Jamaica#Sister_cities

    Kingston has five sister cities.
    Miami, USA
    Kalamazoo, USA
    United Kingdom Coventry, UK
    Mexico Guadalajara, Mexico
People’s Republic of China Shenzhen, PRC

Maybe a twin city is a different term, I couldn’t find anything though.

I -did- see a lot of Jamaica references in Kishiwada though the 1 day I was down there for the festival. Can anyone point to a reference that explains the Kishiwada Kingston connection?

Hi lina! Glad you like reading this blog! Umm I don’t think (hope) there is a dreadist cult though!

Good idea Tori, let’s wander over to Jamaipanese and see if he knows what’s going on!

thanks for the mention Tori and for the message Harvey.

I don’t know of any link between Jamaica and Kishiwada.

I know there is definitely lots of love for Jamaica and it’s culture in Japan but knowledge of a Dreadist Society is news to me…and good news at that ^_^.

yet another place to see when I visit Japan!

These are not dreadlocks, their conrows. Its plates done against the scalp. Dreadlocks is when your hair locks and becomes like ropes. Come on people. Just google image Dreadlocks then conrows if ya’ll are so in the dark.
