Chris: Fortunately, it isn't a regular occurrence of my job, or my head would split open. I can't even begin to describe how much help I get to translate. Keep in mind too, that I don't know ALL the laws, nor have I read every legal document. Only those that I need relevant information. For example, I don't drive here, but I know the driving law as it pertains to Americans and some other English-speaking countries. Also, I know the procedure for taking the driving test. (Hint for Americans: it's insane. Your International Driver's License is only good for 1 year in Japan.)

Adam: I've heard some different theories as to why they want younger ALTs. One that is a bit more plausible (although still fairly incredulous) is the idea that younger ALTs are closer in age to the students. Someone who just graduated college is only 4 years older than a senior in high school, therefore it is more likely that the students and the ALT will something in common. However, don't lose faith because older ALTs generally have more experience adapting to a foreign culture and maybe even teaching, which are two criteria that my Board of Education prefers. Good Luck!

Any idea if JET likes to choose younger rather than older applicants? I know JET has an age cap, and I'm below that, but at 35 I'm not fresh off the farm either. Thanks!

Nice interview, I'm really impressed that you could push through translation of Japanese legal documents... even with dictionary at hand, that's a hell of a job.
