Retired Pachinko Machines
September 6, 2007 on 5:24 pm | In Crazy Consumers, Osaka | | Email This PostSometimes even the machines have to take a break.
Pachinko and electronic slot machines being hauled out of a store in an Osaka shoutengai.

I hate pachinko. It’s loud. Smokey. Expensive, and boring!
I asked the pachinko hauling man if I could take one home as a souvenir… but he said no.

That dude doesn’t look too happy to have his picture taken.
I heard what they do is they make the old pachinko machines and they make them into “Silent Pachinko” and feed it to the young pachinko machines to make them stronger and louder.

Not cool if Harvey’s taking these picture’s without approval and not pixelizing the eyes or such. There’s laws against stuff like that.

Whenever I see a black bar over someone’s eyes, I get the impression that something naughty is going on. Is it just me?

Usually I pixelate
http://www.japannewbie.com/2006/06/03/bad-priest/
These days though I’m kinda borderline. For example, what -is- the law on pixelating? How much does it have to be pixelated to be legit? What if it’s a video that you have taken of a famous site, and there are other people standing around in the video?
I wonder what kind of rights the individual has if they catch their photo being used somewhere without their permission… And I wonder how these laws work internationally!
Someone get me a lawyer!

Dear Harvey,
I really love your blog and all the cool things you have on it!!!
I live in Los Angeles and would love to get a set of the sumo figurines from the Loft that you have posted under Gaijin Gifts.
Unfortunately I don’t speak or write any Japanese.
Do you have any suggestions as to how I can purchase them?
Thanks!!!
Layne

Loft is an awesome store with lots of cool stuff you can’t find.. well outside Japan.
When we were in Japan, my GF spent aaages in there at the ones in Kyoto and Shibuya. Ok and I had cool stuff to look at too like the taitskun dudes.
A pity their website is all Japanese.

Regarding photos, I asked a lawyer friend and he says this.
As long as the photo was taken in a public place, you haven’t slandered or defamed the person in the picture, and you are not using the picture for business purposes, you’re free to use it as you please.
Of course, no idea if the law is the same in Japan.
