Adam, they call that 京都外大 (kyotougaidai) here. Those 外国語大学 schools are most famous as places for Japanese people to go learn English, or other foreign languages.

however, they also have huge programs for foreigners to come in and learn Japanese.

In Kansai, actually it seems that Kansai Gaidai, http://www.kansaigaidai.ac.jp/ is more famous than Kyoto Gaidai, but everyone also knows KyotoGaidai.

As a foreigner coming in on an exchange program, in all honesty, you'll be totally fine no matter where you go. The instruction will probably be similar, and you'll learn the most from your host family and friends you make on campus anyway! Also, Kyoto is an awesome city. I bet you'll have a blast there! No problem, go for it!

I kind of babbled, but I guess a summary.. in Kansai, Kansai gaidai is the most famous of the language oriented universities, but as a foreigner coming in, it doesn't really matter :-)

Harvey,

Any thoughts on Kyoto University of Foreign Studies? It's offered as an exchange program through my school, San Francisco State University.
