Osaka Meal Takoyaki and Okonomiyaki

Takoyaki and Okonomiyaki can constitute a meal in Osaka.

To people in the Tokyo area, this would be unbelievable. To people in the Osaka area, well… It’s not an everyday occurrence for sure, but few would deny that it happens from time to time.

A more common culinary difference between Tokyo and Osaka that involves Okonomiyaki is that in Osaka, Okonomiyaki can become a Teishoku 定食. Becoming a teishoku means that the meal will have rice, miso soup, some tea, and the main dish, Okonomiyaki. It will actually be served in restaurants this way. In the Kanto area, Okonomiyaki will rarely be eaten with rice.

For that matter, in Osaka you can also find Udon Teishoku that has rice with it as well. Noodles and rice don’t go together in Kanto.

Those Kanto people… They don’t know what they’re missing.

    I never ate okonomiyaki when I lived in Tokyo, but in Fukushima it seemed like a legitimate meal by itself. In fact, there was a huge okonomiyaki restaurant with a Tanuki as their mascot, and they served all of the different 風s.

    いつも興味深い記事書きはるなぁ、って感心しています。(もう、今日は疲れたから日本語で・・・ しかも、大阪弁で・・・ 笑)

    そうですよね。お好み焼き定食、うどん定食、ラーメン定食はあたりまえ! しかも、我が家では、なんとスパゲティーの時も、ご飯出てくんで~ ^^;
