BookMooch

If you’ve got books you don’t need anymore, sign up for BookMooch.

You sign up, and request books from people. There is a points system that encourages everyone to give away and request books from others.

There are over 400 books currently available from Japan based moochers, and you can mooch from abroad as well.

The system looks pretty good. I’m going to get signed up!

I registered and searched for books written in Japanese, but everything looks to be manga. I was hoping for some novels, especially the Japanese versions of Murakami Haruki’s works.

Alex, I have most of Murakami’s works in Japanese, and I know my wife would be happy if I got rid of a few (a lot) of my books when I get back to Japan this summer. Any other authors you’re interested in? I pick up many more books than I could ever have time to read myself. You’re welcome to just about anything I have except my autographed copy of Pinball 1973.

Hey I would love to get some Haruki, and I have some Haruki that I’m done with as well.

We should get book lists together and solicit each other for trades.

I’m in Kansai, where are you guys?

Even if we can’t meet up, we could always trade by mail.

    Sound like a good idea?

Well, home for Mayumi and me is up in Iwate-ken, so mail will probably have to do. Then again, maybe we could get together when I visit Hiroshima this fall, as I could stop by on the way through Kansai.

Would be great to meet up! Let me know when you’re passing through in the fall! I’ll get a book list available sometime soon… :-)

If you need a copy of Japanese for Busy people… they’ve got plenty. Hah.

I see they have Berlitz Japanese. If you ever see a really old edition, circa 1960s, grab a copy if you want a good laugh. There’s a whole chapter pretty much devoted to seducing Japanese women. When I get back home I’ll have to scan it and put it online. It’s really dated and corny… but hey, it worked for me! (笑)

Well, I live in Korea at the moment, but I wouldn’t mind trading some stuff through the mail. I’d like to read all of Murakami’s works in Japanese, from beginning to end, eventually. My wife would really like some more of his works, too.

If you’re up for it, you could contact me by email at alexbrotman@gmail.com .

And I thought that old Berlitz Japanese was “interesting”… This phrasebook for Filipinas living in Japan takes the cake. A small sampling:
    私は売春婦でなく、タレントなの。
    目的がSEXなら、よそへ行って。
    ….
    眠くて体が動きません。
    ….
    妊娠した。子どもを認知して。
    ….
    おならくさい!
