The next time someone does something that surprises you, shout びっくり仰天! bikkuri gyouten! And get Japanese style points.
「仰ぐ」(aogu) “to consult” or “to look to”

「天」(ten) “heaven”
仰天 (gyouten) “astonishment” or “amazement”
So literally, the Kanji from this phrase mean to “look up to heaven”.

Great word!
