Osakayaki
November 10, 2006 on 11:27 am | In Food | | Email This PostAt festivals in Kanto you can find Osaka-yaki for sale in some of the food stalls.

If you ask an Osaka native what Osaka-yaki is, they’ll ask you what you’re talking about.
The Osaka-yaki you can buy in Kanto resembles a mini Okonomiyaki, but just a bit different. There was no nori on it, and also I can’t remember any significant filling such as pork, squid or octopus which is usually in Okonomiyaki.

Osaka is better!
They also sell okonomiyaki at festivals in Kanto, along with Osakayaki.
I guess the appeal of Osakayaki is that it’s smaller and cuter.

Although for true fans of Okonomiyaki, definitely head down to Hiroshima. Truly the mecca of the ‘yaki

Haha, yeah Heather that’s Mayo! I wonder if it’s kyuuupie mayo… Tarako has come.

Hey, tell me: is Japanese mayo sweet or sour in general? My husband is a huge fan of mayo (also, his rims are quite stationary), but he likes it sour. The existence of sour mayo would surely help me convince him that Japan is the place to be. ;>

Hey Heather, I believe that one would categorize Japanese mayo as sweet… not sour. Though. I’m terrible at explaining tastes. Can anyone else help out? It’s not the same as US mayo… it’s more think and… creamy.
