Japan Vending Machine Biz

I was just randomly walking around one day (I tend to do that a lot) and ran into this extremely small shop.

The shop is literally so small that I could not get a picture of the inside in a way that would convey its size.

Basically when you walk in the front door that you can see in the picture, there are a few toys from the US hanging on the wall immediately in front of you. If you look to the right, there is a glass counter with some other toys inside.

If you look closely at the picture, you can actually see the toys on the wall thru the front door. That’s the back wall of the shop.

That’s it.

The place is so small that it is crowded if two people get inside simultaneously. If the other person in the store were someone you didn’t know already, it would be unbearably uncomfortable.

When I commented on how small the shop was, the shop owner said that it used to be bigger, but recently she got tired of running it and scaled it down. However, she cannot completely close the shop, because in order for her to legally keep her tobacco and drink vending machines out front, her building must be involved in some kind of business.

Interesting.

She probably doesn’t sell any of her goods ever, and doesn’t care… and only relies on the profits from the vending machines.

I wonder how much it costs to get set up with one of those machines…

I want one that sells hot snacks!

Interesting indeed. That explains a lot about japanese ’shops’ of which Osaka seems to have more than its fair share, huh?
